A good hedge choice is the Nandina Domestica, also known as Heavenly Bamboo (but it's not real bamboo, it just has a similar structure and visual similarities), that can be used as a privacy screen or hedge if you use multiple plants together or alone in a small or narrow area. This shrub will make your garden much more colorful through all the year and you can also grow it inside your house.
Classified as an evergreen plant, it's foliage range from light green to bronzed or pinkish red, depending on the season. But that is not all, it will also grow creamy white start-shaped flowers (attracting bees and butterflies), that will turn into bright red berries (some birds like them).
Once established it's one of the toughest plants, however if the temperature drops below 10°F or 12°C it will loose all its leaves...
Nandinas prefer acid soils, rich in humus, preferably moist (but it's drought tolerant).
It grows in sun or partial shade and softwood cuttings or fresh seeds (old ones may take a long time to germinate) should be planted around November. It's mature size is usually 6 feet high (2m) and for a denser growth lower down on the shrub you should prune it in early spring, cutting the oldest branches at ground level.
